Patología del rodete glenoide: Lesión SLAP

What is a SLAP lesion of the labrum?

SLAP is the abbreviation for Superior Labrum fron Anterior to Posterior

The glenoid labrum is a fibrocartilage that contributes to the passive stability of the glenohumeral joint, along with the capsule and articular surface. The tendon of the long head of the biceps muscle inserts on its superior part, forming an intra-articular region.

These injuries can occur by two mechanisms:

  • Good for traction during throwing movements in throwers (volleyball, handball, tennis...)
  • Either by compression of the biceps tendon by the humeral head during a fall on the hand with the arm stretched out in front of it to cushion the fall.

¿Cuáles son las manifestaciones de un SLAP?

Clinical manifestations may include clicking, popping, or internal pain during rotational movements. A feeling of instability or a sensation of shoulder subluxation may be associated.

What additional tests are performed?

An arthral scan is recommended to locate the lesion, although only 45% of cases are detected. Only exploratory arthroscopy truly allows for a joint examination.

Treatment for SLAP

Treatment is essentially surgical and varies depending on the type of injury:

  • Well a resection of the damaged umbilical cord
  • Bien una reinserción del rodete

It is common to associate these procedures on the labrum with a tenotomy or tenodesis of the long biceps tendon (cutting and fixation of the tendon).

The surgery is performed arthroscopically and can be done on an outpatient basis.
