Ozone Therapy (Ozone Infiltrations)

Ozone therapy

(Ozone infiltrations)

At Biziondo we apply ozone to the spine with other treatments when necessary. Ozone infiltrations on the back and neck achieve great results without having to operate.

What is an infiltration?

An infiltration, roughly speaking, is an injection. It consists of injecting certain medicine into joints, wounds, soft tissues or nerves so that the medicine acts directly in the areas that require it, thus reducing or eliminating localized pain. It is more effective than medications taken by mouth.

What is ozone?

Ozone is a gas derived from oxygen, it is a molecule of O3 with multiple therapeutic effects. It helps as an anti-inflammatory, it helps to further vascularize the lumbar or cervical area. It also helps in the regeneration of tissues. It produces an increase in the blood's ability to absorb and transport oxygen, which improves circulation and cellular functions throughout the body. In addition to this hyper-oxygenation, it protects the nucleus pulposus when it is damaged by neutralizing the toxic products that are released there and that inflame it, favoring the reabsorption and consequent reduction of the herniated material that is in turn the cause of nerve compression. Reduces neck pain, as well as low back pain.

David Izquierdo, Manager of Biziondo, talks about the details of the ozone infiltrations

For which column problems does ozone infiltration work?

Ozone therapy, used for both hernias or disc protrusions, whether lumbar or cervical, is highly effective in most cases. Ozone has multiple applications and is one of the most used treatments to solve herniated disc problems without the need for surgery. Depending on the patient's diagnosis, we combine Ozone therapy with other treatments such as vertebral axial decompression, achieving maximum results. It is important to mention that to say that ozone infiltrations work, it is necessary to take into account how they are applied. There are 2 correct ways to perform ozone infiltrations in spinal, paravertebral and intradiscal patients. In a muscular way, an ozone infiltration will not have real effects on herniated discs. Unless there is a placebo effect that makes the patient feel improvements in their symptoms. Which infiltration is better? It depends on the patient's pathology, we explain each one below:

Paravertebral ozone infiltrations

Paravertebral ozone therapy is performed in consultation. In a procedure in which ozone injections are applied accompanied by other medications in the area of the affected spine. The area is previously cleaned, an analgesic is placed in the area where the herniated discs are (back or neck) and the injection is applied slowly and for a long time to avoid discomfort to the patient.

Intradiscal ozone infiltration

In intradiscal ozone infiltrations, the injection of ozone / drugs is done directly into the damaged disc, in the nucleus pulposus, this is called Discolysis. Seeking to reduce the inflammation of the disc and in this way reduce the compression to the nerve roots, thus reducing pain.

This is performed in the operating room with local anesthesia, however it is still a minimally invasive intervention that does not require hospital admission, in which the patient can go home after a 2-hour recovery.

In both injections, the patient can return to his normal life the same day, although if he prefers he can lean on a lumbar girdle or resume his daily activities 24 hours later.

How long does the effect of ozone last on herniated discs?

The duration of the effect of ozone infiltrations is highly variable. It mainly depends on the type of injury the patient has, if the infiltration has been done properly, the state of the herniated disc (if the herniated disc is very fibrous, it is more difficult for ozone to take effect).

Sometimes it is very difficult to talk about the effect that an ozone infiltration will have, there are patients who do not even feel improvements, others who feel improvements for short periods of time, and some more for those who with a couple of sessions of ozone infiltrations, solved his column problem.

How many ozone sessions are necessary to treat herniated discs?

Ideally we could talk about 1 session, the so-called "infiltration test". If in a first ozone infiltration, the patient's symptoms do not improve by 80%, there is no reason to carry out more sessions. It is not because ozone does not show benefits in patients in general, but rather that this particular patient has a more important lesion, for which a more appropriate spinal treatment should be sought.

What are the advantages of ozone infiltrations in the spinal column?

It is an inexpensive treatment It does not usually present side effects It is not necessary to hospitalize the patient

What are the risks of ozone infiltrations in the spinal column?

Ozone by itself has no contraindications, however, it must be taken into consideration that other anti-inflammatory drugs are also added to ozone infiltrations, which are the ones that can cause common natural reactions.
