What is the best treatment for a herniated disc?
A herniated disc is a condition that affects many people, causing pain and limiting their quality of life. At Biziondo, we specialize in offering nonsurgical treatments for herniated discs, providing effective and personalized solutions for each patient.
95-99% of herniated discs can be cured, and the vast majority are asymptomatic. The body does its job by reabsorbing the nucleus pulposus. Many people have had hernias throughout their lives without even realizing it, which can lead to problems such as disc disease in the future.
What is a herniated disc?
A herniated disc occurs when the nucleus pulposus of an intervertebral disc moves outward, pressing on the nerve roots and causing pain. This displacement can be caused by natural wear and tear, sudden movements, or lifting heavy objects.
Common symptoms of a herniated disc
Symptoms vary depending on the location of the hernia, but generally include:
- Pain in the affected area (cervical or lumbar).
- Pain radiating to arms or legs.
- Numbness or tingling in extremities.
- Muscle weakness.
Non-surgical treatments for herniated discs
Although a herniated disc can often be cured without surgery, it is important to be evaluated by a spine specialist. If you experience temporary episodes of pain, you may be able to resort to axial vertebral decompression, physical therapy sessions, or intradiscal or paravertebral ozone injections.
At Biziondo, we focus on conservative treatments that have proven highly effective:
Axial vertebral decompression
Axial vertebral decompression is a noninvasive technique for lumbar and cervical spine problems. Traction is applied on a computerized table, creating a space between the vertebrae (painlessly), allowing the nerves to decompress and oxygenate, thus facilitating the reabsorption of herniated discs and eliminating pain. You can find more detailed information at this link.
Advanced physiotherapy for the spine
A physical therapist is a healthcare professional who is highly trained to treat lumbar and cervical problems. However, before starting any treatment, they must have an accurate diagnosis in order to prescribe the most effective therapy for your case. Some of the tests a physical therapist should order include MRIs, electromyograms, and dynamic foot X-rays.
Ozone Infiltrations
In ozone injections, a mixture of gas (O3) and anti-inflammatory drugs is injected to reduce the swelling and size of the herniated disc, thereby eliminating or reducing pain. If you need more information about ozone injections, you can access them here.
If the herniated disc is causing problems such as constant pain, leg pain in the case of lumbar herniated discs, spinal cord compression in the case of cervical herniated discs, pain in the upper extremities, perhaps at that point treatments for herniated discs without surgery are not indicated for your spine problem, however there are minimally invasive spine surgeries with which the spine patient can recover their quality of life that are definitive and safe.
Same-day hernia removal (no hospitalization)
A percutaneous hernia repair is a procedure in which a small incision is made through which a cannula is inserted to remove the hernia fragment that is compressing the nerve and causing pain. You can find more details here.
Lumbar disc herniation surgery with endoscopy
Spinal surgery for herniated discs involves bringing in an optician (small camera) to remove fragments of the hernia in a minimally invasive manner. Not all hernias can be treated with this technique, and there are other options that offer better results, such as percutaneous hernia removal.
Lo ideal para curar la hernia discal, es primeramente tener un buen diagnóstico, en base a ese diagnóstico es cuando el especialista de columna podrá indicar el tratamiento más adecuado para usted.
