At the French Institute of Spine and Traumatology Biziondo, we treat various hand problems.
Carpal tunnel treatment
Carpal tunnel syndrome is the compression of the median nerve at the wrist. The median nerve provides sensation to the pulps of the thumb, index finger, and middle finger. It also provides motor innervation to certain muscles of the thumb, the thenar muscles.
Dupuytren's disease surgery
Dupuytren's disease is defined as a retractile fibrosis of the median palmar aponeurosis, which can extend to the digital fascia.
It is characterized by the formation of bands, nodules, and umbilical cords, which irreversibly lead to the closure of one or more fingers. Finger retraction is usually not accompanied by any pain.
It is most common in men aged 40-50, and there is often a family or hereditary factor. Alcohol, diabetes, and some medications can be causative factors.
Quervain's pathology
It is an inflammation of the sheath that covers the tendons of the abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis (tenosynovitis), which both run within the same fibrous tunnel on the radial edge of the wrist, in contact with the radius.
Irritation usually begins with a change in activity, a blow, or unusual use. The irritation is then sustained by friction, causing the tendons to become nodular and swell within their inextensible sheath.
Trigger fingers
Trigger finger is a very common benign condition. It manifests as pain in the palm of the hand during flexion or extension movements of a finger. It can progress to painful blockages of the finger during flexion. Sometimes these blockages become permanent, preventing us from fully extending the finger.
Rhizarthrosis Surgery
La rizartrosis es la artrosis en la base del pulgar. Corresponde a un desgaste en el cartílago entre el hueso trapecio y el primer metacarpiano.
Some treatments for this pathology are:
- Pyrocarbon implants. This involves placing a thin implant between the joint surfaces, avoiding direct contact with the arthritic surfaces. This technique is "economical" in that it does not preclude the use of a more invasive approach if the situation requires it later.
