Elbow arthroscope
FOR JOINT AND TENDON PATHOLOGIES
Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows the surgeon to explore the interior of the joint through small incisions and work with pen-sized instruments. Most people have heard of knee or shoulder arthroscopy, but arthroscopy also applies to several elbow pathologies. The elbow is the joint that connects the arm and forearm. Because the incisions are smaller and the dissection is less traumatic than with conventional techniques, arthroscopy will cause less pain, less postoperative edema, and faster functional recovery. Long-term functional outcomes are identical.
¿Cuáles son las indicaciones de la artroscopia de codo?
El rol el artroscopia de codo en el tratamiento de lesiones articulares ha aumentado considerablemente en los últimos años.
Arthroscopy can be used to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, including elbow osteoarthritis, joint foreign bodies, epicondylitis, joint stiffness, and certain fractures.
Elbow fractures and trauma can sometimes cause significant stiffness. These joint contractures and stiffness are sometimes accessible through arthroscopy.
Although osteoarthritis cannot be cured by arthroscopy, patients with it often improve with this treatment, with improved function and less pain.
Following a clinical and radiological examination, sometimes supplemented by an MRI or arthroscopy of the elbow, your surgeon may eventually suggest elbow arthroscopy as a treatment for your joint problem.
What is elbow surgery like?
Elbow arthroscopy is a surgical procedure performed under general or local-regional anesthesia. It can be performed as an outpatient procedure (the patient returns home after the procedure) or during a traditional hospitalization. A fiber optic camera is inserted into the joint through incisions a few millimeters long, and the image is magnified and viewed by the medical team on a monitor. Other small incisions are made to pass instrumentation to allow the surgeon to operate. Arthroscopy is sometimes combined with other surgical procedures.
What is the follow-up after elbow surgery?
After surgery, the elbow is placed at rest in a sling or immobilization orthosis. The hand is mobilized quickly, as soon as the limb awakens. The duration of immobilization depends on the surgical procedure. The operated limb is kept elevated to promote resorption of the edema, which can be significant. Some procedures require immediate reeducation, while others do not.
